I've thought about anthropomorphic animals my whole life. Often busy in my other career as a graphic designer, I couldn't dismiss my clandestine fantasies of animals in sports, animals partying, animals performing in tiny nightclubs, animals operating fishing tours...stuff that would have prompted me to get laughed out of art school, but there you have it. My favorite stories are the Beatrix Potter books, Wind in the Willows, the Babe movies, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, and anything by Nick Park.
I began to address my animal fetish in 1994 when I had a booth at the famed Renaissance Faire in Novato, California. Kitty Wenchkin, The Squirrel of Leicester, and Friar Duck were some of my characters back then, and they were, well, spineless. Fast forward to the present, where they have modern clothes, skeletons, and can often stand on their hind legs. I've fully owned my lifelong fascination with animals who behave like people and I'm darned proud of it.
Here are some pictures of my most current dolls. They're 13"-16" tall, posable on wire frames. The heads, feet and hands are made from a nearly-indestructible hybrid form of paper mache. The outfits are all handmade, and each one is one-of-a-kind!
